That's All

Deep down inside the romantic girl dreams of a boy who'll twirl her around the dance floor while this song is sung -- and it will be forever. Until then, I wish you all a beloved Valentine's Day that carries on and on and on ....

Give them a day and they want a week

Image
Valentine's Day. Blech! A DAY. One unit comprised of 24 hours. That's enough. But now I see ads for Valentine's Week. Valentine's Weekend.  When will it stop? Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not opposed to love or romance. Quite frankly, I'm open to both.  And another thing, please don't tell me I have the greatest love of all.  My son is a treasure. That I'm fully aware. Cupid's arrow had absolutely nothing to do with that unquestionable affection, either. Please don't be condescending by reminding me that I'm loved by so many people. You know exactly what the modern Valentine's Day represents.  Yes, I'm a tad pissy that I am without. So sue me! I'm not angry at love.  I'm aggravated about Valentine's Day. Something else that irks me about this holiday are the people (read women) who seem to gloat that they aren't spending it snarfing down chocolates they bought for themselves. Great! Hooray. Her foolish hawt man...

Mancub's Kindness -- a photo journal

Image
I tried displaying these photos creatively the other day. I had a slide show ready and it wouldn't work when I attempted posting it. How rude! This is the Valentine's Day gift my son gave to me ... and continues to give me daily. I was so touched. Like any mom would do, I put this up on my refrigerator. It's a real pick-me-up!

Tickled pink with kindness

You could have knocked me over with a feather. Valentine's Day, you know the day I love to hate, turned out to be something fantastic. First came the handmade card from Mancub (Yes Lydia, I will post the real thing soon.) That in itself helped turn the heart-filled day around. Then, I got to work and no one irked me right out of the gate. Again, this is something unprecedented. So, you might want to make a side note on your calendar about that. As many of you know, I am not wholly fond of everyone with whom I work. Go figure! Yeah, like I'm the only person who has daydreams of tripping co-workers and kicking them while they are down. Or, ever so lovingly tapping them with the bumper of my car. Psh! The next thing that helped make the day less regrettable and annoying needs some explaining. So, here goes... A couple of years ago I bought a fellow lab tech a birthday card and passed it around to be signed (we look out for our own unlike the retail staff.) Another birthday rolled ...

the BEST gift EVER

Here is the key for a single mom to forget how much she loathes Valentine's Day: Be a 14 year old boy who seems absorbed in his own video game playing world Take an ordinary piece of copy paper Fold it in half length wise Fold it again, downward Write on the front " Dear Mom, I hope you like this gift, (open ) " Flip it open (length wise) Write at the top of the page, " It's the best that I can give." Write on the lower half of the folded sheet " I hope you like it because ..." Unfold the page so it is flat Write at the top "... because it's my heart .. ." Draw a big red heart in the center of the page Write at the bottom "... Happy Valentine's Day !" Refold it so it appears to be a card Give it to your mother and watch her cry

The Game of Life comes with no rule book

Image
It's not that I hate men. I'm far from ready to don some Birkenstocks and join the Indigo Girl caravan. I still dig doin' the deed with dudes. I spent the day lamenting over what my Valentine's Day post would be about.I considered rehashing what could possibly be wrong with me or the men I date or , this or that. I wasn't going to throw a pity party. Nope. Valentine's Day is a most certainly a reminder of my singlehood. But it's not what I wanted this to be about. I see the guys scrambling around the mall finding gifts to appease the lovely lady in their lives. I can see the beads of sweat building on their furrowed brows as they sign the finance papers at the jewelry store across the hall. Yikes! Perhaps we should begin at the beginning. Believe me when I say I seem to make friends more readily with the male of the species than I do with females. Maybe it's because, while still a very young girl (age 4ish), my closest friends were boys (and one girl wh...

A perfect couple

Friday the 13th and Valentine's Day. For this girl, they make a perfect pair. Look for more on this subject later. Until then, I give you this song. Coincidentally, this song was released in 1983 when I was wide eyed and ready to take on the world at age 18. If I knew then what I know now, well, I'd still be in the same boat. It's all still a mystery.

Happy February or what's not to love?

There are two things very apparent from reviewing this video: Turtlenecks are not flattering on me and I make some seriously screwed up faces. What's not to love?!? This was intended to be a perky welcome to the month that is the shortest on the calendar, celebrates love and Black History Month. The results are anything but chipper. Watch.

Ghosts of Valentine's Day past

Image
There was a time when I had excuses beyond excuses for why I hated Valentine's Day. I can't think of any right now. Perhaps I've finally managed to let the ghosts of the past move on to a higher plain of existence. Just maybe I've managed to exorcise them from my existence. Nothing good comes from holding on to bitterness. In just a couple short days, Valentine's Day will come knocking. I'll be at work watching the scads of flower arrangements passing the window. I'll see the flurry of husbands and boyfriends making a mad dash to the jewelry stores, Victoria's Secrets, Fannie May, and Bath and Body Works. Carlton Cards will be a mad house as people attempt to find the perfect last minute card. I'm a sucker for those cards that plays the idiotic tunes when you open it. I'll laugh and make fun of the last minute shoppers. However, there's no doubt that I'll secretly long for a surprise delivery from an admirer. Now I'm laughing a tad ov...

Love is Innocent

Image
While driving home after shopping at Target and Marshall's , I was listening to Colin Hay's solo venture, Man @ Work. I highly recommend it if you loved the 80s Aussie band, Men at Work . His acoustic rendition of Overkill and Land Down Under are absolutely sublime. One of the tracks is Love is Innocent. It led me to think about what a bad rap LOVE gets from the world. It's not isolated to specific locales. It surrounds us, but love isn't to blame. Love is innocent! ... People? Not so much. I resent the number of times I've heard (personally and second hand) the phrase, 'If you love me ... " What a haphazard, horrific means of abusing the one pure thing the world has to share! For one reason or another it is we humans who've perverted the idea of love. It's not a recent occurance, either. It's as old as time. So, why is it so hard to put a little love in our hearts? Pride, perhaps? Fear? We're all too often left saying, "love, look w...

To Flink, with Love ...

It's Friday, and it's been a couple of days since I posted. It's not that I've felt less than inspired to write, but I didn't want to write when I was absorbed in negativity -- work negativity. I gave stern consideration to expressing my frustration about the workplace; however, a little gut instinct made me refrain. It's truly not a worthy venture. I walked by Fannie May Candies today. Our store is just around the corner from this confectionary nightmare (at Valentine's Day season). The place looks like it was hosed down with a crimson spray gun that was out of control. I don't know what upsets me more: The fact that people will pay such exorbitant prices for chocolate. Or that I know I won't be given a heart shaped box to rip open and devour its contents ... or share. I know that I should find solace in knowing that I have a loving family, a son who adores me, friends who dig me. BUT! BUT!!! There's always that incredible sensation that someon...

The Face of Valentine's Day Past

Image
If I could put a face with my past Valentine's Days, this would be it: The mug of David Hasselhoff . When someone mentions his name I chuckle. It's not always audible, but it's there. I found this image on photobucket.com. I was searching for humorous Valentine's Day graphics. Do you think if the Hoff had been clairvoyant he still would have done Baywatch and cheesey covers of 70s tunes for Germans to love? Yeah, I think he would have, too. The Man-cub and I ventured out into the snow so my car could be checked by my mechanic. What I thought was the transmission icon glowing on the panel was actually the 'check engine' symbol. After 3 hours of sitting in the waiting area, I was informed that my car is putting out more pollution than desired. However, it's not a crucial repair. It's highly recommended ($400. minimum estimate). Al Gore might come give me a mighty bitch-slap for not having it done this very second. Since I don't live in an area where ...

Giving Valentine's Day the finger

Image
In my 42 years I have experienced very few palatable or romantic Valentine's Day. Looking at the calendar and seeing its approach has always given me a slight case of hives. I nauseatingly gaze upon the beautifully wrapped, scarlet, heartshaped boxes at Fannie May. My eyes fixate with cynicism at Hallmark's windows adorned with cherubs and stuffed animals. My acid reflux nags at my gut to see Victoria's Secrets showing off the boudoir delights. Miss Vickie seduces us with the illusion that she has what we need for a perfect romantic romp in the satin sheets. Quite frankly, if I don't already possess that which would make it a perfect boudoir bonanza, then all the lace and underwires in the world won't be of much service. As my former husband always told me (when he couldn't bring himself to spend the money on lingerie), "it's all going to end up in a heap on the floor anyway. What's the point?" I'm attempting to keep a positive attitude ab...
